Afrocubism to Roskilde Festival 2011
The star-studded music collective is ready to spread African-Cuban magic dust over the festival site.

After having announced two stadium rock bands – Iron Maiden and Kings of Leon – in these cold months, Roskilde Festival now look towards the tropics.

AFROCUBISM (INT) is a musical meeting between Cuba and West Africa. This transatlantic supergroup was on the drawing board for the first time in 1996. Back then the Africans did not reach Cuba.

Instead, the Cubans recorded Buena Vista Social Club, one of the biggest sales successes of the global music scene. Now the meeting has taken place and the original vision is finally played out. African superstars such as Toumani Diabaté, Djelimady Tounkara and Bassekou Kouyate are unusual partners for Buena Vista member Eliades Ochoa, often regarded as the Cuban answer to Johnny Cash.

With Afrocubism, Roskilde Festival presents a meeting between musical superpowers. A row of stars, which individually could take up a whole evening slot with their own respective projects, exchange stardust. It is quite a rendezvous, also when thinking of the many common threads linking together the Cuban and West African music scenes through history.
